You'll note that Ad-Aware lists items under "Critical Objects" and that
most of the rest of the stuff gets labeled under a less critical heading.
Cookies aren't dangerous - unless you care about your privacy. If all you
care about is avoiding trojans, spyware, and the like, then ignore the
cookie reports. But quite frankly, you might as well get rid of all of it
- none of it is doing you any good.
Today, the real malware is trojans. Get AVG Antispyware from Grisoft
(formerly Ewido), which is free for home users. Also get A-Squared Free
which is another good trojan detector.
Security researchers now say that all the virus and spyware writers are
TESTING their malware against ALL the detectors before releasing them into
the wild. Which means almost nothing will detected until someone can
provide a sample to the anti-malware vendors. And the malware writers are
also monitoring the new antimalware signature databases and immediately
altering their malware to evade again.
A recent test showed that most of the malware detectors - including ALL
the big boys like Norton and McAfee - are detecting and clearing FIFTY
PERCENT OR LESS of malware on a given machine.
Which means you need at least FOUR malware detectors - an antivirus, at
least two spyware detectors, and a trojan detector. In the near future,
you will also need a rootkit detector, as rootkits are on the rise.
You also need at least one and preferably two spyware blockers such as
Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster, SpyGuard, or Windows Defender
(the latter only for Windows XP). All of these are free for home users.
You also need to stop using Internet Explorer and use Firefox or Opera -
which do not execute ActiveX Controls without your knowledge. This is
where ninety percent of spyware comes from - using IE.
Or you can just switch to a MacIntosh or a Linux machine and forget all
the above for the next five years or so, at least, since it's unlikely
that either Mac or Linux will be adequately targeted by malware writers
any time soon - and even if they do, it will be a lot harder to corrupt
Macs and Linux machines than it is that crap sold by Microsoft.
