Discussion:
A yEnc decoder for Thunderbird's newsreader?

I rarely visit binary newsgroups, but enjoy ebooks which
appear nowhere else in usenet. They're usually in yEnc
format, and often posted in multiple parts.

Various free newsreaders (Agent, Grabit, Mes) would
work, but I prefer to continue with Thunderbird for both
mail and usenet. Is there a plug-in or tool that enables
Thunderbird to collect and decode multiple-part yEnc
posts? I need only the basics - no sophistication.

Thanks!

The yDecode deficiency can be easily solved for Windows Tbird with yProxy,
but the 'combine' part of the operation is another matter.

Ed Mullen proposes this workaround

Multi-part Newsgroup Messages

Personally I would do it some other way.

Thanks, Mike.
I tried it, and under Vista that utility won't open and
operate per Mullen (written 1994). So as you recommend,
I'll go some other way.

Fred, don't waste your time trying. Simply install, configure and start
using Grabit:

I'm with JC on this - don't waste your time trying to configure TB -
you're better off using a 3rd party program that sits in your system
tray doing it's stuff automatically. Personally, I use BinaryBoy
(payware) because I bought it years ago before Grabit came on the scene
and I get free upgrades for life, plus when I tried Grabit, it didn't
play nice with Avast so I stuck with BinaryBoy. As John said, go with
Grabit, it seems to do almost everything BinaryBoy does and it's Free :-)
