I have a program or two which allows adjustable line wrap for text
files. But they only work with XP and not with Windows 7. All text
editors I find for Win 7 only allow word wrap to the margin. I wish
often for shorter line length.

At least Notepad2 and Notepad4 can set line wrapping options...

Uh... Wordpad can already do that. By adjusting the margins on the ruler.

Setting the margins does not give me the character count which is what I
want. Setting the margins means I have to count the characters and
readjust the margins until I get the wrap I want.

As I said in my original post, I had a few programs for XP that did set
to a character count.

I see. I sometime need such precise feature too.

A have several in my collection which match the requirement.

AkelPad. Has a limit for number of characters or words per line. Including
showing a vertical line for the limit at specific column number (can be
different that the wrapping position).

EditPad Lite. Has predefined limits for number of characters per line: 56,
64, 72, 80, 96. BUT: it doesn't seem to be customizable to a user defined
number. CAVEAT: WILL split & break words themselves. i.e. it character-wrap
instead of word-wrap. I think the author misunderstood the meaning of
"word-wrap".

MadEdit. Has user definable limit for number of characters per line.

PSPad. Has user definable limit for number of characters per line via
"soft-wrap" and "right edge" vertical line settings. "Soft wrap" must be
enabled, otherwise it'll wrap at window width.

FYI, Notepad++ doesn't have any. What a shame.

Jeese JJ, how many text editors do you need.

"There are lots of unnecessary tools out there. Especially for lazy
users.", you said.

Same old.

I'm thinking that you want to reformat text and insert linebreaks at a
set position without breaking words and keeping paragraphs neat.

Well there was an application called Clippy which did that and much more
back in the mists of time. It's the cats bollocks.

It does work on Windows 10.

I think you will have to get it from the wayback machine.

So, it used to be available from wots.coolfreepage.com#### <do not click

In later years the website triggered AV so be aware.

The copy I have here is Clippy 1.3.0 Build 20827
Copyright (c) 2002 Way Out There Software

Good luck. Lots of applications called Clippy I guess.

You can use the `fmt` or `par` with the `-w [WIDTH]` option to specify
your width.
