Opening up the WinAmp source to all goes badly as owners delete entire repo

The owners of WinAmp have just deleted their entire repo one month after
uploading the source code to GitHub. Lots of source code, and quite
possibly, not all of it theirs.

The deletion happened soon after The Register enquired about the seeming
inclusion of Shoutcast DNAS code and some Microsoft and Intel codecs.

What's worst is that, they tried to twist open source: No forking.

It's not just upsetting third party companies, but it's upsetting the entire
open source community - which roughly, is the world.

Well, fork you!

Good thing it's already been forked by many people.

Looks like they wrote their own license. You don't own open source. It
means open source. Nothing more, nothing less. Have a nice read if you
feel so inclined.

Note: Free and open source software a.k.a FOSS is other route they could
have taken but it was their choice not to. You guys are all about choice
right. Not hoovering up every bit of software you can stick a grubby
viral license around. Am I right?

I'm not upset. Neither is Shit the cat. The hedgehogs have officially
issued a somewhat earthy statement which roughly translated says that
they don't give a f*uck either. The squirrels are shaking their heads.
Next doors dog is bat shit crazy. I can't get any sense outta him. So,
in my world I don't know anyone who cares.

My advice. Don't bet the business on it, or the house.

WACUP is still good: https://getwacup.com/

Hopefully, the developer got the source code. ;)

I have winamp but haven't been using it. Is it likely my version, years
old, will continue to work as it did? Only asking about "likely",
don't expect a promise.

I'm in the same boat and heard the news here. I DID run Winamp earlier
this week and it worked fine - mine is version 5.8.

Note that winamp.com's current home page says

"Winamp builds the tools that empower artists to manage their music
and revenue while delivering a player that offers the perfect
listening experience."

which I interpret to mean "we'll screw the average user at every turn
with paywalls and other such tools to maximize profit"

Uh I don't think I'll be "upgrading" soon.
