I've used this since 2005, even after Microsoft long ago added their
Sticky Notes app to Windows. Very potent software. I've tried others
over the years, and looked at replacement candidates, but discarded them
as not being as robust as this one. I especially like that I can
roll-up stickies to minimize the space they occupy on the desktop, and
roll-down when I want to view them. Make for nice popup calendar
reminders, too, with optional on-top positioning, sound, and even an
alarm.

At one point, the default skin changed which I didn't care for. Fonts
were too big, too much spacing, so there was more whitespace than
needed. The old skin was not included, but I could download it from the
web site. Lots of skins to let you customize how the stickies appear.
The author also changed from storing backups into separate RTF files
(for which I reported a bug that the program was not trimming down the
number of backups to the specified count) to using a database in version
10.

The author does appreciate donations, but there is no crippling of the
program if you don't donate. Absolutely no ads, and true freeware.
